I just went to the website and they listed $197 as the charge to join?? I would have liked to see a sample.

There are a lot free on iTunes ( over 100), enough to decide if you want to pay for the rest.
If you have an iPhone or iPad then they are really easy to access via the built in podcasts app.

how did you get it for free?

See posts 151 and 152.
You can download around 116 podcasts from iTunes.
The real thing will cost you.
But there is a lot of useful info in the free ones for a newbie like myself.

Hi

First time poster here. Still living in the UK but will be popping over a couple of times this year before making the big move in 2018. I am a subscriber to Thai Podcast, you can pay in 4 instalments which is what I have done. I also subscribed to a site called Thai Style, they provide materials and a local teacher whom you pay directly £12 an hour. Sounds great but the material seemed pretty dated and the teacher was basically a Thai girl that worked four jobs here, she wasn't a proper teacher at all in the true sense, she had never met the company or been assessed or any of the things you might expect in a process of attaining a teaching job. She told me to learn from the videos on Thai Podcast, could you believe it. In fairness, I asked for, and got a refund on the materials I had purchased. The other one that seems quite popular is ThaiPod 101.com, their marketing is very aggressive and off putting once you have subscribed to the free material, Im still deleting their daily spam now. So I will stick with Thai Podcast and once I have a better grasp of the alphabet I will get a Skype teacher online direct from Thailand. There seems to be some really well qualified people doing this for about £12 hr.

As for apps Im using Nemo, Learn Thai from a white guy (LTFAWG) and Thai Script. I also browse other you tube videos and have downloaded Thai2English on my PC, thats very comprehensive and handy. Hope some of this helps.

Ruffian, have you considered using a life teacher via Skype? (I assume that you are not in Thailand now.)

I signed up for LTP back in May by paying for the course over 4 monthly installments. I paid the first two installments and everything was going fine. A few days a ago when I logged in the system is showing my subscription as expired and shows no record of my payments. As a result I cannot access any of the lessons.

I wrote an email to them and sent them a note through the message system on their website informing them of this error but as of yet I have not received any response from LTP. I have wrote to them every day now for 3 days and still no reply or resolution to the problem.  I am very disappointed with this lack of customer support as I was enjoying the course.

I don't know if any of you have experienced similar problems or have a contact number for them? Their silence is very frustrating as their website states they will reply to queries within 24 hours.

An update,

I heard back from LTP and I am back online with full access. It was just a minor Technical hitch so my overall impression is that this is a very good course.

http://www.learningthai.com has been great for me. I've been "Learning to read with Manee and Friends!"

Lots of samples of native speakers as well as explanations and exercises. All free as well...

Nothing opens up on this website?

Unfortunately yes.

No idea what happened over the years (the quoted post is from 2006).

Links to the internet are always prone to change/shutdown etc.

It's well possible that there are more outdated links.

If you have an Australian, Canadian, or US library card, check to see if your library offers Mango Language.  It is great for learning pronunciation, better than Pimsleur in my opinion. You can also purchase acess on their website.   Your library may have Pronunciator instead which is ok.

I always thought you needed to have native speakers around you to listen and learn.....

but that is "proper" language and now there is so much slang , shortcuts and OMGs   that its hard to learn by listening .....

the small amount of German I know goes away quickly once I am out of Europe ,  no reason to remember it until my next visit :)

I give credit to anyone who can pick up an new language in a year or 2
