Samui island street cleared after landslide

SAMUI, 2nd November 2016 (NNT) - Officials today cleared the street where a landslide incident had occurred at Khao Laem Yai viewpoint, Koh Samui district, Surat Thani province, with traffic being able to resume as usual.

Officials had been informed at 8.30 p.m. on 31st October 2016 that the mountain side had collapsed onto the road surface due to heavy rains, obstructing cars from reaching Mae Nam sub-district, which is an important tourist attraction on Samui island.

The authorities inspected the area and found large rocks from the mountain lying on the ground. Samui Highway authorities then brought equipment and machines to remove a large pile of rocks from the road surface.

The road obstruction caused by the landslide was cleared during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Koh Samui Chief District Officer Phaiboon Omak has instructed Koh Samui Highway Office to closely monitor the area to prevent a repeat of such an incident. The general public on Samui island have been asked to travel with caution as the island will continue to experience heavy downpours.

The  Surat Thani Royal rain-making operation center have out done themselves. :clap2:

Or was it just nature?  :whistling:

I guess that this has solved the water shortage situation anyhow.

Drove past yesterday and some rocks remain but it has been coned off. Don't know if they just did a bodge job or some more rocks have fallen since. :cowboy:

Careful driving through here folks as they are widening the road and there are many hazards.

This was a few days ago... The big slide was not as bad as I thought it was going to be...

There is still a lot of construction in widening the hill section of the road...signs everywhere... just heed the signs drive slowly!!

That coffee shop at the view point is very close to the road now, makes one wonder when  it might get dinged!

There's lots of old school ways to prevent landslides from blocking roads and rails.  Chain link fencing and landscape netting are just a couple of them.

I have to say that this road and the pass over the mountain has been improved no end. There are now two lanes each way, a new surface and barriers.

...all that is needed now is for the locals to work out what the left had lane is for; particularly if driving an articulated lorry at walking pace as per the <deleted> in front of me in the right (ie WRONG) lane this afternoon :(
