CHIANG MAI: -- In a bid to reclaim footpaths and traffic lanes in the popular Waroros Market (better known as Kad Luang) in Chiang Mai's Muang district, 33rd Military Circle officers joined Nakhon Chiang Mai Municipality officials on Monday to visit the area.

The area is chronically congested as vendors intrude on the footpath and road surface and public transport vehicle's crowd parking spots.

To help resolve the problem municipal officials drew lines for zones to sell goods and parking areas were set up. Vendors were told to move stalls further into the market and to leave at least onemetre of space on the footpath for pedestrians.

Deputy chief Colonel Seubsakul Buarawong said the vendors agreed to cooperate to keep the area tidy.

Have they ever done a proper survey to see how many people want these food vendors to be removed. The army always say people are complaining about these vendors but never supply us with the proof. Thailand is about street food. Instead of kicking these vendors out, why not provide them with new street side food courts (like Singapore). This way the vendors keep their businesses, we can eat street food and the side walk are cleared for the army to march on.

I've just had a good idea .

Why not have shops selling things , pavements for people to walk along and roads for cars and bikes to drive along ?

Quite often I see shops branching out onto the pavement selling their goods , food stalls on the road selling their food and people having to walk in the middle of the road to walk down the road

If the people selling stuff on the sidewalks are forced to move what will become of all the plastic stools preventing people from parking? Will shops that build brick gardens on the sidewalks fronting their stores be encouraged to keep their merchandise inside? Let's face it, Thai people have a different concept of "public property" than we do. They believe that they have as much, or more, right to use it as the rest of the public.
