So please, let's be fair and take this exceptionally positive example at face value, in the absence of any clear evidence to the contrary! 

yes im sure you have, look at it this way... kind as he was but he should have handled it 

in the proper manner i.e the governor of the prison should have been informed and the children

should have been taken home by a responceable  person
