CityNews – The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy Plan (OTP), in collaboration with CMU, has held its third and final meeting to discuss the Light Rail Transit proposal and listen to the public’s opinions and suggestions before submitting it to the government for approval.

The OTP has proposed two plans for a Light Rail Transit system for Chiang Mai, one that goes underground in and around the old city and one that is at road level. There are three lines to both plans.

Plan A will take the trains underground around the old city, and will take 6 years to complete. The trains will travel at 30-35 km/h and will be on time as it will not be subject to road traffic and traffic lights. It will cost 100,000 million baht to complete and will break even in 2027.

Plan B will keep the trains at road level, and will take 3 years to complete. The trains will travel at 15-20 km/h and will be subject to obstructions on the roads and traffic lights. It will cost 30,000 million baht to complete and will break even in 2023.

Looks like they are going with a trolley system (with overhead wire), rather than a third-rail system. Would a trolley work in a true underground system? I can't think of an example.

As CM traffic will get worse every year, it seems more appropriate (as the payback time is only four years different) for an underground project that meets no delays (apart from {cynically} corruption resulting in poor construction materials and bad maintenance) and the odd terrorist attack. The above road level project would probably be similar although free from a terrorist attack.

Hope for the underground one.

But make the overground also. Around the moat...

And ban all old tuk tuks....

And make seoarate bicycle lanes

Trump revealing that he is African is more likely than three billion USD being spent on a mass transit project here.  Land acquisition would take years.  Swampy was forty years in the making.  Interchange projects routinely take ten years in the US.  A couple of clean busses circulating the most might be a feasible starting point.

Reply from the Government, can you hold off for a few years,as we have spent

all the money on Fighters,Tanks, and Submarines, which were  desperately needed,

to protect Thailand from its enemies, and for national security. we will get back to you.
