District chief on the move again armed with stickers - but was that a machine gun?

Bang Lamung district chief went to Walking Street in South Pattaya to check up on drugs, human trafficking and weapons in the area's Go-Go bars.

While the main aim of the exercise seemed to be to put warning stickers outside each entertainment venue Thaivisa were left wondering if one of the 20 strong raiding party of police and interior ministry officials had a machine gun.

Naris Niramaiwong has been busting illegal aspects of the sex trade and gambling in the resort for much of this year, with mixed success.

On Wednesday he turned his attention to Walking Street where ten bars were inspected.

Thai female workers' ID was checked and urine tests were done.

A total of seven people were found not to have their ID with them but no drugs were found.

This was a carbon copy of the number of places raided, and the results achieved in Sri Racha karaoke lounges last week.

Stickers were stuck out front of the Walking Street bars; they say that the establishment is a weapons and drugs free zone and call for an end to human trafficking.

People can be fined up to 1.2 million baht and jailed for up to 12 years for human trafficking.

The expression has become the buzzword of the last year or so after US authorities urged the Thais to crackdown on the trade.

Naris said it had been a successful evening.

"We are doing this to rid Thailand of human trafficking," he said. "Everything was fine tonight but the checks will go on continually according to the Ministry of the Interior and Department of Local Administration policy".

The Siamchon report made no reference to what was hanging around the neck of one member of the raiding party.

I think I'm a victim of trafficking.  And so is the district chief and almost everyone else.

--------

Anti-Trafficking Persons Act B.E 2551 (2008)

Whoever, for the purpose of exploitation, does any of the following acts:

  1. procuring, buying, selling, vending, bringing from or sending to, detaining or confining, harboring, or receiving any person, by means of the threat or use of force, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power, or of the giving money or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person in allowing the offender to exploit the person under his control; or
  2. procuring, buying, selling, vending, bringing from or sending to, detaining or confining, harboring, or receiving a child;

is guilty of trafficking in persons.

“Exploitation” means seeking benefits from the prostitution, production or distribution of pornographic materials, other forms of sexual exploitation, slavery, causing another person to be a beggar, forced labour or service, coerced removal of organs for the purpose of trade, or any other similar practices resulting in forced extortion, regardless of such person’s consent.

------------

"Forced labour or service, regardless of consent."..     Wot?    If you consent to something, how is it forced?

So, yeah, distribute stickers about something that nobody understands.

If the local officials feel the need to have a machine gun toting bodyguard to safely visit the area, I'm not sure that's a good sign.

On several levels.

Edit:  But tomorrow we're going to read that the guy was called in to work on his way home from the paintball arena, and didn't want to leave the paintball gun on his scooter...

Some who 'was familiar with the matter' told me there were serious concerns from the Katoy section of the Pattaya 'community' and that threats of a handbag attack had been made, and taken seriously, by the authorities.

So part of their 'outreach strategy' included a machine gun to repel any such subversion.

Even at Swampy airport they don't carry machineguns like that...it must be pretty dangerous there in Pattaya.

They should go around the bars to make sure that the people working there are of legal age, but a machine gun is out of place for such a thing.

reminds me of some european airport security 40 years ago.

armed soldiers or or Police patrolling the area does not give the Visitor a warm fuzzy feeling that they are safe if armed troops/police are patrolling the area especially with automatic weapons. They look like a group of storm troopers.

Does no one know "Low Profile"

Sure we need her, it was the Shinawatra clan who started enforcing the closing hours in Pattaya, on the excuse that quality tourists are in bed at that time.

Still sure you need her?

sure beats what we got
